Into Space

Zero contamination: When particular demands are put on spaces, innovative solutions are required. Cleanzone (19–20 November 2019, Frankfurt am Main) showcased solutions for the management of contamination risks in high-tech production. Top level speakers provided inspiration and momentum.

November 2019

Communication, broadcasting and navigation: In March 2019, 2,062 satellites were orbiting the earth.[1]  What do they all have in common? They were built in cleanrooms. From the pharmaceutical industry to medical engineering and micro technology, the production of high-tech premium products takes place under extreme conditions. At Cleanzone in Frankfurt am Main on 19 and 20 November 2019, 80 exhibitors showcased pioneering solutions for complex material flows in cleanrooms.

The sky is not the limit:  Space exploration is taking the lead as a driving force of cleanroom technology – but there is still no equality in this field. The goal of the start-up Die Astronautin gGmbH is to put the first German woman in space. Founder Claudia Kessler in her keynote speech The fascination of space – women's power between atmosphere and orbit spoke about the role of women in the natural sciences and technology. "Our initiative gives German politics a chance to make a clear statement supporting women in technical professions," says Dr. Insa Thiele-Eich, one of the project's two potential astronauts. Along with Dr Suzanna Randall, they are practicing the contamination-free handling of instruments and conducting scientific experiments in a so-called glovebox. One of them will fly to the International Space Station in 2020 and, with a little luck, will have exciting insights to share with the cleanroom industry at the next edition of Cleanzone from 18–19 November 2020.
